Half of the 10 fastest-growing social-networking sites are video-sharing sites. The California-based vidShadow, which has grown by 639 per cent in the last two months, leads the way. It now has 281,000 members.
Alex Burmaster, Internet Analyst at Nielsen Online, said: "Whether it's people snacking on video clips or feasting on full-length TV programmes and movies, the video sites look set to be the name on everybody's lips as they improve their technology, the ease of use and awareness amongst our TV-loving nation."
Supporting Burmaster's view is the news that YouTube has replaced Wikipedia as the UK's most popular social-media website. It attracted over 10 million unique UK users in 2007, nearly one million more than Wikipedia.
"Social media is a growing and varied culture, providing a wealth of entertainment, information and connections for the increasing number of people being drawn in by its power," said Burmaster.
"The fact that almost two-thirds of Britons online visited at least one of the top social-media sites shows it isn't a niche part of the internet but is now the backbone supporting its growth," he added.
If you're a fan of video-sharing and social-networking sites, you can watch videos at Web User's YouTube channel and become a Facebook friend of Web User by searching for "WebUser Magazine".
