What is the Windows Shortcut Exploit?

The Windows Shortcut Exploit, also known as CPLINK, is a zero-day vulnerability in all versions of Windows that allows a Windows shortcut link, known as an .lnk file, to run a malicious DLL file. The dangerous shortcut links can also be embedded on a website or hidden within documents.

The exploit works when you open a device, network share or WebDav point carrying an infection—you don't need to click on anything for the exploit to work, even if you have AutoPlay and AutoRun disabled.

SophosLabs first saw this exploit at work through the rootkit W32/Stuxnet-B, which targets Siemens SCADA systems to discover the system default password.

While Stuxnet only affected Windows machines with infected USB drives plugged in, the Windows Shortcut Exploit in general can work through file shares and WebDav as well.

PREDATOR locks your PC when you are away, even if your Windows session is still opened.
It uses a regular USB flash drive as an access control device, and works as follows:

you insert the USB drive
you run PREDATOR (autostart with Windows is possible)
you do your work...
when you're away from your PC, you simply remove the USB drive:
once it is removed, the keyboard and mouse are disabled and the screen darkens
when you return back to your PC, you put the USB flash drive in place:
keyboard and mouse are immediately released, and the display is restored.

CryptoExpert creates encrypted virtual disks and these disks are visible as usual disks with drive letters (for example, G:, H:, Z:, i.e. with any drive letter that is not used by other system devices).

The data stored on a CryptoExpert disk is stored in the container file. A container is a file, so it is possible to backup a container, move or copy it to other disk (CD-ROM or network, for instance) and continue to access your encrypted data using CryptoExpert.

Any free drive letter (or choosen letter) in the system may be used to mount and to open an encrypted file-container for access. When the virtual disk is opened, you can read and write data as if it were a conventional removable disk.

McAfee Site Advisor is a good way to sort the good websites from the bad, online.

Once installed it appears as small area of text in the bottom right hand corner of the browser window. This changes colour depending on the website. Green signifies a website that can be trusted, yellow a site that might send lots of emails or red for sites that are known to send spam or bundle adware into downloads.

Clicking on this text gives the option to read more information about the site. This includes the number of emails received after registration and whether the website links to any suspicious sites. Downloads hosted on the site are also checked.

Most websites are tested by computers at McAfee but it is possible to submit a user report if you feel that a website has been the cause of spam or adware.

In this case the website will be looked at by a member of the McAfee team, rather than relying on automatic checking. The site owner can also leave a message responding to the rating.
